I am a great lover and collector of books and learning, and in my enthusiasm have accumulated many books that I never quite got around to getting through.
In my quest to give each one a try, I first picked up this book, “The Late Lamented Molly Marx” by Sally Koslow.
It’s 320 pages took me about 4 days to finish, and this is considering I work full-time and have a fairly active social life. The easiest time for me to read is on my morning and afternoon commute, which involves spending about an hour each way in the hustle and bustle of the New York City subway system during rush-hour. The noise, the closeness of being packed in close with others and the pushing around DOES NOT make for ideal reading conditions. It mattered not: I was enraptured.
The story follows Molly Divine Marx, recently deseased, in an attempt to discover how she died. With her, you follow her family in the aftermath and flit in and out of her past. She is so far from perfect that I find it makes her incredibly relatable. I like flawed characters. . .it makes them seem more real. I laughed, I cried (literally, in the privacy of my own home AND on a subway. . .embarassing? Hardly. . .that’s how into this book I was).
When the cause of her death is finally uncovered to you, you have run the full gamut of emotion and have reached acceptance. I thought it was a twist, maybe you’re better than me and won’t but I loved it. Maybe, once I’m finished with all my other books, I will get more by this author because she is incredibly talented and I LOVED this book!
